How to Choose the Best Photo for a Personalised Pet Portrait
Quick summary answer
To get the best result for a custom pet portrait, choose a photo that is taken at your pet's eye level in natural daylight, showcasing clear facial features and true coat colours without blurry movement. Avoid dark indoor lighting, heavy filters, or photos where your pet is too far away from the lens.
What makes a photo good for a custom pet drawing?
Our artists at Paw & Thread custom-design your portrait directly from your uploaded image. To capture your dog or cat's unique personality, follow these three core photo requirements:
- Natural Lighting: Take your photos outdoors or near a large window. Bright, natural lighting reveals distinct fur textures, markings, and eye depth that overhead house lights completely wash out.
- Eye-Level Angles: Squat down to your pet's height. Photos taken looking straight at your pet are significantly more engaging and naturally balanced than photos looking down from above.
- High Resolution and Sharp Focus: Zoom in closely on your pet's face. If you can see the individual whiskers and the glint in their eyes clearly when zoomed in, the image is perfect for our design canvas layout.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a photo where my pet is looking away from the camera?
+
Yes! As long as the lighting and details are clear, profile shots and candid side-views make incredibly unique, artistic pet paintings.
What if my pet has passed away and I only have lower-quality photos?
+
We specialise in memorial pet portraits. If you only have older or slightly blurry smartphone photos, upload the best one you have and leave a note during checkout. Our team will review the image details to ensure we can create a beautiful piece.
Can you combine separate photos of two pets into one canvas portrait?
+
Absolutely. At Paw & Thread UK, you can upload separate photos of your dogs or cats. Our designers will seamlessly blend them into a unified multi-pet portrait layout.
